A palette is where the actual colour mixing happens — wells to hold each colour separate, and open area to blend them without contaminating what is still in the pot.

Work from the wells outward: a little colour into the mixing area, thinned and adjusted there, never back into the well. White plastic shows a mixed colour honestly; clear plastic lets you hold it over the paper to check the value before you commit it.
