Fabriano Elle Erre Coloured Paperboard, 180 gsm

Fabriano Elle Erre Coloured Paperboard, 180 gsm — 180 GMs.

Coloured art paper and board come pre-toned, so the paper itself does part of the work — a mid-tone ground means you draw both the shadows and the highlights instead of only the shadows.

That is why pastel and charcoal work is almost always done on toned stock. A textured surface holds more pigment than a smooth one, so the same stick of pastel gives deeper colour; heavier weights stand up on their own for mounting and display.

• A toned ground lets you draw highlights as well as shadows
• Textured surfaces hold more pigment than smooth ones
• Heavier weights stand alone for mounting and display
