Description
A sponge lays paint as texture rather than as strokes. Where a brush leaves a directional mark, a sponge stamps a broken, mottled, random pattern — foliage, stone, cloud, rust, water — that would take a brush far longer to fake and never look as natural.
Dab, do not drag — pressing and lifting keeps the texture; dragging smears it into an ordinary stroke. Load lightly, test on scrap to see the pattern, and turn the sponge between dabs so the same shape does not repeat and give itself away. Rinse it out fully before the paint dries inside, because a sponge that has set hard is finished — the pores are what make it work, and dried paint seals them.
A four-piece set of sponge tools — a range of shapes and textures rather than one, which is the point of a set: each sponge has its own grain, so switching between them varies the pattern instead of repeating one stamp across the whole picture.
