Description
A calligraphy pen with a chisel nib is the tool that makes lettering look like calligraphy rather than handwriting. The flat edge lays a wide stroke when you pull down and a thin one when you move sideways, and that automatic thick-and-thin — governed by direction, not pressure — is the entire look of broad-edge scripts.
Pigment ink is the reason to choose this over a dye pen: pigment is lightfast and water-resistant once dry, so finished lettering does not fade on a wall or run if it is framed behind glass with a little humidity. Hold the nib at a constant angle — around 30 to 45 degrees for most scripts — and let the edge do the work; the moment you start rotating the pen to chase a stroke, the letters lose their consistency. Cap it promptly, since a chisel tip dries unevenly and then lays a broken edge.
The 2 mm nib is a medium broad-edge width — large enough that the thick-and-thin contrast reads clearly, small enough for body text and practice sheets. If you are learning a script like italic or foundational, 2 mm is the width most guides are drawn at.
