A white or pastel gel pen writes opaquely on top of dark paper and dried colour — the one thing an ordinary pen cannot do, because normal ink is transparent and simply disappears into the surface.

It is used at the end of a drawing rather than the start: highlights in an eye, light catching an edge, the last white lines on a black-paper sketch. Let each pass dry before you go over it again, and build the brightness in layers.
